Looking English

I left the Big Apple this weekend for a jaunt to south Jersey, where among other activities I got my hair cut beautifully for a fraction of the price it would have cost me in New York. The hairdresser who cut my hair had just got back from a trip around Israel, so we chatted about how brilliant Tel Aviv is for a bit, then she mentioned that she had lived in Belfast and also London and we talked about the weather. And then she said, after she'd finished with my hair, "You don't really look English."

I have pale skin, blue eyes, possibly better than average teeth for a Brit, according to my colleague from Bermuda, and although I haven't been back to Blighty in nearly a year last time I was there I certainly blended into the crowd.

I know it was just a throw-away comment, but it's been niggling at me - just what does 'English' look like?

Is it famous?

Famous and a world-renowned politician?

Just not that attractive?

(This one suggested by the American consultant in the household)

One of my favourite actors?

Errr?

(again suggested by resident American when requested to think of an English woman... I think we watch too much F Word)

What do you think - who looks English, and what does English look like?

I actually totally agree with your hairdresser, but I couldn't define it. There have been a couple of times when I knew instantly just on sight they were English here. Once across a restaurant with a guy and I was right. Then in the middle of nowehere on a ranch and it was an Essex couple. Even the Hubster can spot an English guy a mile off. For instance my blogging buddy PamOKC hubby is very English looking, despite 20 yrs here.

As I say cannot define it, but it's true.

Maybe it's more about mannerisms or style than actual physical features. My friend thinks I look different from Americans, she thinks it's my 'European bone structure' but as the majority of Americans are descended from the British I find it hard to see a difference. I'm petite, pale and dark haired so when I visit Paris French tourists always ask me for directions. Either I just look geographically savvy or people take me for French. Who knows

Couldn't tell you, but I think there's a bit of "I'll know it when I see it" involved. Hope all is well over there in NY!

For the most part, I can spot a European by the way they dress- much smarter than the average American. In most cases that is combined with a trimmer body type (definitely not American.)The rest is a little difficult to put a finger on as the others have said.

I think part of it is the weather beating look. That and prominent cheek bones, dark hair, light eyes and a defined chin. Then again, some are harder to spot.

We all know, through the miracle of mathematics, that it's impossible to look English. There are 60m English people alive today. They each look unique.

Here are a few generalizations I feel comfortable with:

When people say that English people have bad teeth, you can tell they haven't travelled much.

When people say that Americans are fat, you can tell they haven't been to England in a few years.

When people say that English people dress better than Americans, you can tell they haven't been to Wales.

When people make comments like "European bone structure" you can tell they're racist.

It's easy for me for men, I can now identify Brit men quite easily by their similarities to the ears of prince Charles. Women are more tricky ;-)
